The author traces Hodges' life from his early days as a Confederate soldier through his career as an educator and his later years as a community leader. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated his life to serving others. Hodges was born in Davie County, North Carolina, in 1844. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 18 and fought in several major battles, including Gettysburg. After the war, he returned to Davie County and began his career as an educator. He taught at several schools in North Carolina and eventually became superintendent of schools in Davie County. In addition to his work as an educator, Hodges was also active in politics and community affairs. He served on the Davie County Board of Commissioners and was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly. He was also a Mason and a member of the Methodist Church. Hodges died in 1936 at the age of 91. He was survived by his wife, Sallie, and three children. His legacy lives on through the many students he taught and the community he served.
