Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This non-fiction work offers an in-depth study of stadiums in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds and the development of the modern stadium through to the early 20th century. While there is some exploration of medieval theatres, the focus is on the evolution of stadiums that hosted sporting events. The author's inclusion of the 1903 University of California Stadium in Berkeley, California, arguably the first modern-day concrete stadium, demonstrates the throughline of the work and also provides readers with an understanding of how sporting events and specifically the rise of college football in the United States influenced the development of these venues.
