Excerpt from An Investigation Into the Elastic Constants of Rocks: More Especially With Reference to Cubic Compressibility
The determination of the cubic compressibility of solid substances is, as above mentioned, beset with serious difficulties. On the one hand, every direct method which has been suggested presents experimental difficulties which tend to impair its accuracy, while on the other hand the indirect methods are based on assumptions as to the isotropy of the materials, which are not warranted in the case of certain rocks. The indirect methods de pending ou the theory Of elasticity are capable of considerable variation, and it is of interest to examine them in some detail in order to see whether certain of them at least may not be depended upon to give reliable and satisfactory results.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This remarkable book presents the findings of a groundbreaking investigation into the elastic constants of various types of rocks, particularly as they pertain to cubic compressibility. By employing a novel method of simple compression, the author meticulously measured the strain and elasticity of rock specimens. These measurements shed new light on the behavior of rocks under stress, revealing their ability to undergo cubic compression under the immense pressures found within the Earth's crust. The author's meticulous approach and extensive data provide valuable insights into the physical properties of rocks, particularly the acid plutonic and basic plutonic varieties, making this book an indispensable resource for geologists, geophysicists, and anyone interested in the behavior of rocks under extreme conditions.
