Excerpt from Structural Relations of the Pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic Rocks North of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Valleys
Throughout a considerable area of the pre-cambrian rocks northwest of the head of the St. Lawrence the orientation of the lakes and streams conforms largely to.the strike of the highly inclined Archaean rocks. The strike valleys are doubtless chiefly the product of pre-cambrian erosion in beds of softer schists or zones of interbedded crystalline limestone, although they are now partially filled by drift and may have been somewhat modified by glacial action.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the geological history and structure of the Canadian Shield, a region of Precambrian rocks that forms the core of North America. The author examines the relationship between the Shield and the surrounding Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, proposing that the southern edge of the Shield is the result of extensive faulting that occurred after the deposition of the sedimentary rocks. This faulting created a steep escarpment, known as the Laurentian Plateau escarpment, which marks the boundary between the Shield and the Paleozoic lowlands. The author argues that the escarpment is not the result of erosion, but rather of tectonic activity, and that the Paleozoic strata originally extended much farther north over the Shield than they do today. This book provides new insights into the geological history of the Canadian Shield and the processes that have shaped its present-day landscape.
