Excerpt from Annual Report of the Normal, Model, High and Public Schools of Ontario, for the Year 1871: With Appendices
As certain parties have objected to the Depositories for the supply of High and Public Schools with maps, charts, apparatus, prize and library books, as an interference with private trade, I reply that just as well might they object to the interference of Govern ment in many other matters which come directly in contact with the interests Of private trade and manufacture, as I shall further illustrate. In doin so I shall briefly refer to the Objects for which our Department of Education exists, an explain the principles on which the Depository has been established.

The book explores the current policies and legislation regarding public funding for schooling and presents statistics on the increasing number of schools, students, and teachers. It also examines the contents of the revised curriculum and the positive impact of the School Act. The report gives insight into a shift in pedagogical attitudes from rote learning towards a more analytical style and the integration of new subjects such as drawing and music. The author stresses the importance of equipping schools with modern supplies such as maps, globes, and textbooks to facilitate the new pedagogical goals, leading to a discussion about regional differences in school resources.
