Fly fishing for trout has been one of the most rewarding and satisfying activities of my life. It has given me a lot of precious memories, of people, places, … and fish! It really is that good. It is so good that I have felt compelled to share it with others by teaching. For over 20 years I have shared what I have learned and made a lot of wonderful lasting friendships by doing so. I am embarking on a series of ebooks to spread that knowledge to a wider audience. My hope is that I can help future generations to feel the same sense of wonder that I have been privileged to feel. This is the first book of that series and deals with a subject that is often neglected, wading. I was going to use “The Craft of Wading” as the title but my editor (one of my students) suggested something else. Her suggestion is a phrase that she hears often when we fish together. When she is wading and slips, she yelps. When I hear her yelp, I look to see if she is ok, then yell, “Stay vertical!” So, the title of this book is “Stay Vertical! How to Wade Trout Streams.” I'm also hoping that others will also feel compelled to pass our traditions on and to do what they can to preserve our fish, their habitat, and our sport. I am a long-time member of Trout Unlimited and have served as a Chapter President, and in other offices.
