Reseña del editor:
Pouring nearly a billion dollars into the local economy, New Bedford is the largest fishing port in the Unites States. Along with the men and women who fish local waters, countless other trades support the fishing fleet, creating a vibrant and powerful economic engine centered in the heart of New England. The portraits within this book of the individuals who work the waterfront provide a window into the complexity of the industry as a whole. The fishermen themselves, those who build the gear they use in daily operations, the lumpers who unload the ships after each trip, and the many others who process and sell the catch tell us in their own words what life is like behind the scenes both at sea and ashore. Talented, inventive, and industrious, the women and men of the port continue the many traditions handed down by their ancestors. VOICES FROM THE WATERFRONT illuminates the real personalities behind the sound bites typical of the evening news, taking us into the lives and waterfront activities normally seen from our passing cars.
Biografía del autor:
Laura Orleans, an independent folklorist with an M.A. in folklore from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is founder and director of the Working Waterfront Festival. She has done extensive ethnography of ethnic and occupational traditions in New England and elsewhere. She was the Principal Investigator for two National Park Service ethnography projects Faces of Whaling and Places of Whaling. Her interest in the commercial fishing industry grew out of a sense that the community was misunderstood. She created the Working Waterfront Festival to provide a forum for the fishing industry to tell its own story. She is excited to bring these stories to new audiences with the publication of this book. Laura lives a mile from the New Bedford waterfront with her husband and two children. Kirsten Bendiksen is co-founder and Associate Director of the Working Waterfront Festival. Commercial fishing has always been a large part of her life. Her father was a fisherman out of New Bedford and her husband was a captain and boat owner for over 25 years. Today Kirsten works with her husband and two sons who operate a trawl and gear shop in Fairhaven for the commercial fishing fleet. Kirsten and her family are dedicated not only to working in the industry, but also to documenting its past and telling its story. In an effort to inform the public about the challenges facing the industry, Kirsten has done everything from giving talks to cruise ship passengers to producing a weekly radio show about the fishing industry. She sees this book as another step in the process. Markham Starr’s interest in the commercial fishing industry began while working for a maritime museum in which he acquired the wooden Eastern rig dragger F/V Roann for its historic fleet. He began looking into the vessel’s history at the last port from which she sailed and found a story to tell. In 2006 he started going to sea on fishing trips to photograph a way of life he feared might soon slip away. In addition to Voices from the Waterfront, he has published multiple photographic books on New England fishing communities including Against the Tide: The Commercial Fishermen of Point Judith, On Oceans of Grey: Portrait of a Fishing Port, In History’s Wake: The Last Trap Fishermen of Rhode Island, and Finest Kind: The Lobstermen of Correa, Maine.
