These twenty-eight papers from the 14th International Conference on the Short Story in English are excellent representations of the more than 150 scholarly papers given at the conference. For the first time, this collection features a majority of writers from neither Europe nor North America. This conference, entitled Influence and Confluence: East and West, was held in Shanghai, China, our first Asian venue, and the papers reflect many of the more than 40 different cultures which were present there. This conference brought writers of fiction in English (Irish, British, American, Canadian, Australian, Caribbean, South-African, Indian, Sri Lankan, Indonesian, etc.) and writers who have had their work translated into English together with scholars of the short story. Writers examined include the traditional ones like Sherwood Anderson, James Joyce, Alaine Robbe-Grillet, Alice Munro and Cynthia Ozick, and more recent ones like Rebecca Harding Davis, Carol Shield, Yiyun Li, Ha Jin, Wang Anyi, and Russell Leong. These papers also include analysis of the short story form itself, particularly in emerging subgenres such as “microfiction” or “flash fiction,” as well as a reexamination of what exactly constitutes the short story genre. Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Maurice A. Lee is the former Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Central Arkansas. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and his PhD, also in English, form the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the founder and Chief Editor of the Journal of Caribbean Literatures (JCLs), and has been the director of this biennial international conference since 1994. His hobbies are tennis, movies, painting, and gardening, and he is finally completing his short sotry collection about his childhood, growing up in Oklahoma. Aaron Penn is the current Managing Editor at the Journal of Caribbean Literatures, where he has worked since starting his M.A. at the University of Central Arkansas. His hobbies are currently limited to anything that can be accomplished during his two young sons' nap time.
