Clausewitz authored this book in the years following his service during the Napoleonic Wars. As a Prussian general with a deep insight into the business of conducting war, Clausewitz was in prime position to share his experiences. In addition he also corresponded with many of the leading military commanders and tacticians; their attitude and ingenuity inspires many of the passages in On War.

This edition of Clausewitz's masterwork is translated to English by Colonel J. J. Graham, who was also a battlefield officer with intimate experience of command.
