The Storm
Kasmira could see the reflection of the sea as the light danced high upon her bedroom wall. Am I asleep, or am I awake? I must be awake, she thought to herself. The sun was coming up and she had seen the ghostly reflections dance on her wall many times. But something was different this time. She had the strange feeling that she was floating high above her bed. I must not move. I must close my eyes. She stayed very still, and in a few minutes, she opened her eyes. It was only a dream, and she felt relieved. She turned to the side of her bed, swung her feet to the floor and sat on the edge of her bed. This is going to be a great day. Time to get dressed.
Kaspar was on the sea, and the castle was surrounded by high walls with the west wall going down to the water. It was a very large castle which housed the royal family and several hundred others, who all lived inside the walls. Not far from the castle was a large market with many shops making up the center of the town.
Kasmira was the daughter of Davos. Living inside the walls of the castle, Davos and his family were in a position of importance. Kasmira, her mother, and her father lived just down the hall from the royal residence. Her mother, Ana, was from Valencia, and Davos was Greek. She had been educated with several children of the castle, which included Shakir and his twin sister Shakira. She was also educated by her mother and father. Davos, the royal physician, taught her Greek, and her mother taught her Spanish. The main language of Kaspar was Arabic.
Shakir was next in line to be the king of Kaspar. Shakir, Shakira, and Kasmira were all fifteen years old. They had grown very close and saw each other every day. Shakira and Kasmira stayed together every day, while Shakir would only spend the morning with them. In the afternoon, he received instructions in combat.
Today was a special day. Their education was over. The two girls were having lunch atop the west wall, looking out over the water. Kasmira was looking toward the west. "I have a feeling there is going to be a storm. Look how dark it is over the water." Shakira leaned over and gave Kasmira a hug. "It does look dark, but don't worry about the weather. Today is a great day. What are you going to do now that we are educated women?" Shakira said this with a smile.
"I am not sure. I can't be a physician like my father, because this is not allowed for a woman. I find it strange that a woman can't be a physician in the castle but can be a healer in the villages scattered throughout the land. I could use my skills in language and work at the docks, but I don't want to work outside the castle. I guess I will work with my mother in the library."
Shakira was smiling even more. "You know Shakir is in love with you. You two could get married and you would be a princess, and truly become my sister."
"I know he likes me, and I am very fond of him. Do you really think he is in love with me? Do you think fifteen is too young to get married?"
"Mother got married when she was only fourteen. You are an old lady."
"Just wait, he is going to talk to Father, and then your Father, and within a month we will have a royal wedding."
Kasmira scoffed. "I really don't think Shakir has marriage on his mind. All he wants to talk about is how good he is becoming with a sword."
The two girls stayed atop the west wall, talking and planning what they were going to do next. They had paid little attention to the weather until there was a flash of lightning nearby and drops of rain began to fall.
"I love this kind of weather. I love to hear rain falling. I am going back to my room and read and let the rain put me back to sleep." Kasmira said this as she grabbed up her things and ran from the falling rain.
Shakira had just gotten back to her room when she heard footsteps coming down the hall. She ran to the door. "That must be Barak. It is time for his daily meeting with Father. Sometimes I wonder who is running this kingdom, Barak or Father."
Barak was not from Kaspar. In fact, no one was sure where he was from. He had come to the kingdom about twenty years ago, he was married, and had a daughter. Her name was Jada. She was about the same age as Kasmira, but she was educated by her mother and tutors. Shakira and Kasmira saw very little of her.
Barak had started as a clerk on the docks, and within a short time was working inside the castle. Within five years he had moved up the ladder and was now the second most powerful man in the kingdom.
That morning before he left his room he had talked to his wife. "I am going to put my plan in motion today. There are rumors that young Shakir is going to ask for the hand of the physician's daughter in marriage. If things go according to plan, the entire family will be dead by the end of the week."
His wife with a weak smile on her face simply said, "Be careful." She knew that her husband had plans to gain even more power, but she did not want to see anybody killed. She was afraid of Barak and loved her daughter, so she said nothing and always went along with him.
During his meeting with Kadar, Davos came into the room carrying a pot of tea. Davos poured a cup of tea for the king and left the room. While he was not looking, Barak placed a small amount of powder that he had stored in his ring into the king's tea. After he was sure the king had drunk the tea he left and went about his daily routine.
During the day, the king did not get sick but did get extremely tired. He decided to go to his chambers and go to bed early.
That night as Kasmira lay in her bed, she had a funny feeling. She had to close the window because of the blowing rain. She was hot. She threw the cover back. A burning candle gave just enough light for her to see. She looked down at her feet and her body seemed to disappear. She had the feeling that she was floating above her bed. She looked to her right at the large mirror in her room and she could see she was not there. She became frightened, and she drifted back down to her bed. Then she saw her body reappear. She turned and sat on the edge of the bed. "What a nightmare!" she said out loud.
The next morning Kasmira and her mother were eating alone. As her mother started to clean the table, Kasmira said, "Mother, I had a strange dream last night. I dreamed I disappeared and was floating above my bed."
Her mother had her back to Kasmira, and a cold chill went through her body. For a moment, she said nothing. When she regained her composure, she said, "Everybody has strange dreams occasionally. Sometimes I have some that scare me too. It could have been the storm that caused you to have a bad dream. It did not let up during the night. I fear the city is going to have a lot of damage."
Both women finished cleaning up the kitchen table and left for the library. Kasmira stopped to see Shakira. Her mother went to see Davos. When she entered his room, he was sitting at a table mixing liquids together.
"What brings you here this morning? Did you stop at the library?"
"I need to talk to you. It happened last night. Kasmira told me she dreamed she disappeared and floated above her bed."
"Are you sure it was not just a dream?"
"Yes. She said she dreamed she disappeared and was floating above her bed. You and I both know this was not a dream. I think it is time we told her. She must know what is coming."
"You are right. We will talk to her tonight."
