Tested to Destruction is the memoir of a Pennsylvania Dutch man steeped in the culture and values of Lancaster County, PA, who eventually graduated from an Ivy League school and worked for the federal government in Congress, in the Pentagon and even at times “rented out” to foreign governments for specific projects. His memoir is of interest for its insightful views on an everyman, everyday level into societal changes from the 1950s through the end of the century. Along the way he was convinced that the most important study is that of philosophy, and nearly every topic or event spawns some philosophical discussion. But it is a homespun and practical philosophy that is fun to read. There are many interesting characters along the way and even several stories which are, admittedly, embellishments of truth, but no less funny for it. If you appreciate rural life or have experienced life in Washington DC, you will enjoy the ride.

THE AUTHOR David Boyer grew up in Lancaster County, PA, After working his way through college and graduate school as a short order cook, installer of heating and plumbing system, bricklayer and surveyor, he worked his entire career in Washington, DC. He worked in Congress for a Congressman, in the Pentagon in the Office of the Secretary of the Army, and for a number of other agencies, including the US Navy and NATO navies. Much of that time was spent on the Aegis system and the Undersea Sound Surveillance System popularized in The Hunt for Red October. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife and visits grown children and grandchildren. He builds boats, sails and has played piano and violin but began trumpet lessons after retirement in order to play in the Chatham Band. He turns out stained glass panels and collects currency and stock certificates of historic value.
