I am frequently asked, “Grant, if there was one thing I could do, as a new beekeeper, what would you recommend? What one thing can I start doing that would make my beekeeping a little easier, make my hives a little more productive, and make my hobby a little more enjoyable?” My response is universal. “Raise your own locally adapted queens from the hives that excel in your area and survive under your management.” To their stunned silence and escalating apprehension, I offer, “It’s not as challenging as you might think. I follow a simple, uncomplicated method of queen rearing that empowers the most timid beekeeper. With little or no experience, without purchasing a bucket of expensive, specialized equipment, even if you don’t have a mentor, you can raise your own queens. You possess the power to enhance the sustainability of your hobby.” Raising your own queens is a small investment of time and energy that pays huge dividends. With the simple plan I offer in this manuscript, you have all the tools and education needed to raise your own queens. All you need to bring to this process is a willing spirit and about five minutes of your time in the bee yard.

Grant F.C. Gillard began keeping honeybees in 1981 following his graduation from Iowa State University from the College of Agriculture. He started out with twenty hives on the family farm in southern Minnesota and now resides in Jackson, Missouri where he tends around 200 hives...for now. He sells honey at several local farmer’s markets as well as raising his own locally adapted queen honeybees. He is a husband of twenty-eight years and father to three grown children. He pastors the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Missouri, as his “day job.” He frequently threatens to retire to devote his full energy to beekeeping, but secretly, he enjoys the ministry and is greatly appreciated by his congregation. After serving for the past twenty-three years in this position, he has become more of a community chaplain and is often simply called, “The Bee Guy,” or “The Honey Dude,” depending upon which generation recognizes him at Wal-Mart. He is eternally grateful to members of his congregation who have graciously allowed him to dabble in this hobby, and for his restraint of not turning every sermon into an illustration on beekeeping. He is a past-president of the Missouri State Beekeepers Association, and in 2012 received the coveted, “Beekeeper of the Year,” award for his service to the MSBA.
