Silence Descends is a startling imagined history of the future - in which the author, writing at the end of the twenty-fifth century, looks back on the transgressions and assorted acts of madness of the previous five hundred years which have collectively led to the end of the Information Age.
Its story dates back to Volgograd, Russia in 2004, when the city was devastated by a nuclear bomb, an event which the author cites as the beginning of the Information Age's demise; technology could not properly convey the horror and magnitude of the disaster, and "for the first time, the airwaves of the world were struck dumb." From there, he describes a series of events that creates a "gluttony of data" designed to save the world but instead leaves nothing but silence in its wake.
