In the 1957 film Desk Set research librarian Katherine Hepburn valiantly resists both Spencer Tracy and the giant computer he is installing to do her work for her. In the end Hepburn gives in to both of them. The film was more prophetic that anyone could have guessed. Today's research librarian is faced with the plethora of information on the Internet and no Spencer Tracy. Lankes (information studies, Syracuse University) along with a number of librarians and computer specialists presents an overview of seven conferences on the craft of virtual reference along with papers from the most recent conference. They start at the beginning, how to set up a virtual reference consortium and assemble the staff. Once the service is set up, there are problems Spence and Kate could not have expected. What are the rules for giving medical and legal advice over the internet? Is there a consensus on what constitutes inappropriate behavior among patrons?
