DESCRIPTION - Modern Brazilian writing is beginning to establish its presence and reputation worldwide, from the science fiction dystopias of Ignacio de Loyola Brandão to the singular genius of Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro. Authors like Marcio Souza, Clarice Lispector, Ivan Angelo, Moacyr Scliar, and Roberto Drummond have attempted to reshape the national consciousness while seeking to create a truly universal literature. This new Brazilian narrative chronicles and questions long held myths regarding the entire fabric of the country's social and political organization. In BRAZILIAN FICTION: Aspects and Evolution of the Contemporary Narrative, Robert DiAntonio seeks to reveal the scope and significance of the current literary 'Boom' that may be every bit as important as that which occurred in Spanish America. Using a variety of critical approaches, this book examines many narratives from authors who emerged after the military coup of April 1, 1964, authors whose writings were greatly affected by the sociopolitical turmoil of the ensuing years. Not surprisingly, much of their fiction deals with issues of social morality, culpability, and cultural identity. Each chapter turns the attention of the reader to an important aspect of Brazilian literary history, providing a sense of how and why these writers are both innovators and perpetuators of long standing literary traditions. Their works also are analyzed in relationship to recent North American, European, and Spanish American fiction. Designed not only for the specialist but for anyone interested in modern writing, this book adds to our understanding of the significant Brazilian contribution to the contemporary international narrative. Modern Brazilian fiction is shown to be both an ideological testimony and an artistic creation that values originality, craftsmanship, and the ability to engage reader interest. inventory #13373.
