Armstrong native writes book on 1980 tornado by Mitch Fryer
After a tornado hit the Edgewood Estates trailer park in Kiski on June 3, 1980, 7-year old Scott Palmo walked through the park the next day with his family and saw the destruction left behind. It left a lasting impression on him.
I have memories of seeing an oak tree thrown on top of a trailer, a trailer on top of a trailer and a patch of weeds next to it left standing, said Palmo who lived in South Bend in the Shady Plain area of Armstrong County at the time of the tornado. I was in awe. I couldn't believe the devastation. I was fascinated with tornadoes from that day on.
Year later, Palmo, who is a social studies teacher in South Carolina, knew he had to write a book to preserve the stories of the survivors and the volunteers.
Recently, Palmo wrote a book called Twisted Fury, which is about a group of tornadoes that touched down in Western Pennsylvania and some of the surrounding states on that late spring day. One of the tornadoes, which was an F4, hit the trailer park.
In 2004 Palmo tried to Google the storm and found no results. He started his search again in 2006.
The next day I remember walking to my classroom door (I was teaching history at the time) and as I stood outside of my classroom and fumbled with my keys to unlock the door I could feel my conscience tell me that I had to write a book about the storm, he said. It was almost like a Field of Dreams moment.
His search for information was still coming up with nothing so he decided he had to do it himself. He interviewed several people from about eight different communities that were affected by the storm and was able to locate several photographs.
I spent a lot of time interviewing people on their porches and living rooms, talking on the phone and exchanging e-mails, said Palmo. One of the ladies that I interviewed from the Edgewood Estates Trailer Park explained to me that she and her family braced each other on the living room floor of their mobile home when they knew the tornado began to approach their home. When the tornado passed they were sitting on the ground where their mobile home used to be.
That's just one of the amazing stories in the book.
Palmo said his book explains the path of the storm and the stories of the survivors of the storm that swept through. --Leader Times, Thursday, October 6, 2011
Area native writes book on tornadoes
When area native Scott Palmo tried to find information from one of the worst tornadic outbreaks in Pennsylvania, affecting Allegheny-Kiski Valley communities. The other three hit the surrounding states of Maryland, West Virginia, and New Jersey.
When I looked it up online, I didn't find anything about these tornadoes, Palmo said. This storm affected thousands and thousands of people. And I thought, 'something needs to be written about this.'
He said he felt a book should be written to preserve the stories of the survivors and the volunteers. He interviewed several people who were affected by the storm and was able to locate several photographs of the devastation left behind.
The title, Twisted Fury, was a result of pictures of a local trailer and seeing all the twisted homes and destruction caused by the heavy winds. The 84-page paperback is printed by Closson Press in Apollo.
