A serial killer loose in Richmond, Virginia. The female victims have nothing in common except for two things: their murderer, and Kay Scarpetta, Virginia's newly appointed Chief Medical Examiner. As she threads her way through the grisly labyrinth of postmortem clues, she reaches a chilling conclusion: the killer is already closing in on his next intended victim--Scarpetta herself.
