Rezensionen

Grade 4-6-This introductory work covers eight celebrations of Native American life: the girls' puberty rite of the Apache, the Hamatsa Society of the Kwakiutl, tobacco offerings and sweat rituals of the Lakota, the Green Corn Dance of the Creek, the Snake Ceremony of the Hopi, healing chants of the Navajo, the False Face Society of the Iroquois, and modern powwows. The brief description of each ceremony is laced with attention-grabbing details. Activities are included in the final section: two easy recipes, two crafts, and two games. The author's clear, well-informed, evenhanded style makes for easy reading. Watling's watercolor paintings, however, are not as informative or attractive as the photographs that illustrate Karen Liptak's North American Indian Ceremonies (Watts, 1992). Nevertheless, this is an above-average addition.
