Though it was originally compiled by a British packager, a U.S. editor has done a good job of adding American material to this book of lists. Topics covered range from the universe and the human body to the commercial world and travel and tourism. Some of this information is easily found in an encyclopedia or the Guinness Book of World Records: Oscar winners, sports records, tallest waterfalls and longest rivers. However, some information is more elusive: top films by studio, longest running programs on National Public Radio, top fairs by attendance, most- and least-visited states, fastest fighter aircraft of World War II, best-selling Ben & Jerry's flavors. But sources for the information here are not given consistently, and many tables aren't even dated. This is a problem in verifying facts. For example, the list of the 10 most-visited zoos in the U.S. differs dramatically from a similar list in Gale City & Metro Rankings Reporter (reviewed in this issue). Gale gives a source for its information, Top 10 does not. Though there are pictures on most pages, this attractive book is not as heavily illustrated as the typical DK title. A brief index lists the topics of tables, not the names on the tables.

The Top 10 of Everything is a fascinating book to browse and will be popular in school and public libraries, but it doesn't have the authority to serve as a reference book. Sandy Whiteley

YA?Ash has gone The Guinness Book of World Records one better. In this colorful title, he has amassed thousands of statistics on topics of popular interest, listing the 10 most (or least) common, popular, expensive, or best in each category. Despite the British bias and the author's ready admission that certain categories (populations, sporting records, movie/music entries, award winners, etc.) become instantly if not annually outdated, his treatment of popular-culture tidbits is as accurate as can be expected. The wide range of categories reported spans from the natural sciences (the Earth, universe, and human body), to entertainment (music, stage, radio, sports, and travel). Bright, splashy, full-color photos enliven the columnar text, as do relevant "Did you know" sidebars. Ash's tongue-in-cheek book is akin to David Letterman gone straight, and this bona fide Top Ten of Everything will delight and inform YAs in every kind of library.
