John Sweeney schrieb in der "Literary Review" und lobte die Memoiren als: "Eine tolle, herzaufschlagende Erzählung der Rolle eines jungen Engländers im Krieg in Spanien... hergestellt von einem Dichter, der unauslöschlichen Abbildung der Langeweile, der zufälligen Grausamkeit und Dummheit des Krieges".
