Recently we have witnessed drastic changes in international situation at large and the situation in and around the Korean peninsula in particular. South Korea has accomplished diplomatic success by means of its "Northern Policy." She has normalized her relations with the countries of Eastern Europe including Russia and later, with China. She has also been admitted to the United Nations as a full member. In order to shed light on the background and the force of South Korea's political development and diplomatic achivements, Dr. Kim has gathered the papers he wrote on the Northern Policy of Korea and also on her relations with her neighbors in the light of the Korean War and the division of the Korean peninsula.

The central theme is the Nordpolitik policy: South Korea's successful diplomatic campaign to establish ties with the Soviet Union and China to isolate North Korea. Kim provides a detailed history of the Korean War's origins to explain why these modern diplomatic manoeuvres were necessary to overcome the dual character of the Korean division. The book synthesises decades of the author's political and academic analysis. As a scholar who also served as a high-ranking official in the South Korean government, Kim provides an insider-outsider perspective on the geopolitical shifts of the late Cold War and the early post-Cold War eras. The book remains a primary reference for the diplomatic history of the Roh Tae-woo administration. -- Contents: I.
