The extraordinary transformation of the young T. E. Lawrence into Lawrence of Arabia, one of the legendary heroes of the Great War, is paralleled by the miraculous survival of the text he was to write about his exploits. To his Arab comrades and followers he was known as El~Orens or, often, "Wrecker of Engines." To his readers his memoirs of the armed struggle became known as REVOLT IN THE DESERT. Declared unfit for active military service, the 26~year~old Lawrence enlisted in the British Intelligence Service in Cairo. His knowledge of Arabic languages and culture made him invaluable. But Lawrence was an outspoken, almost insolent, recruit. Finally squeezed out of his comfortable position, he decided to cross the Red Sea, hoping to be of use to the Arab leader, Feisel, who had organized the feuding tribes into an army dedicated to ousting the Turks from the region. The story Lawrence tells in REVOLT IN THE DESERT begins with his arrival among those Arabs in October, 1916. He tells in first~hand detail what he discovered of Arab customs and the nomadic way of life. He also describes the lure of the desert. But the core of the book is the account of an armed revolt: Lawrence's ingenious strategy for the taking of Akaba, (the Turkish stronghold thought to be impenetrable), the relentless attacks on Turkish troops, the demolition of railways and supply lines, the early uses of air power and even the preponderance of looting. There are also portraits of great Arab leaders such as Hussein and Feisel, as well as the British Commander, General Allenby. Many of Lawrence's more ordinary comrades are also described in detail and with acute understanding. At age 29 Lawrence was already a world famous, but problematic, figure. By the time of the triumphal retaking of Damascus, the center of Arabic political hopes, he had become embittered by the misunderstending of Arab by Arab, and openly critical of the blatant manipulation of Arab nationalism for the benefit of British interests. In 1919, little more than a year after leaving Arabia, Lawrence wrote REVOLT IN THE DESERT. Like its author, the book itself is something of an enigma, The original manuscript of over 400,000 words disappeared, so he claimed, when Lawrence left it in a bag at the Reading railway station. He rewrote it from memory, but refused to allow it general publication. He had eight copies printed privately (three of which he later destroyed) and only permitted a trade edition of the book to appear in 1926. The text of this "authorized edition," less than half the length of the original manuscript, is the only version ever made available to the general public. What remains, however, is a great deal ~ the exciting record of a critical time in history, told with subtlety and force. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4242401
