The Well Eldery Study conducted by the University of California and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association provided compelling data that demonstrates the health benefits of preventative intervention: Occupational therapy is beneficial and effective in the maintenance and promotion of independing living for older adults. Preventative occupation-centered therapy improved elders' health-related quality of life and reduced health-related costs. This manual provides a conceptual and practical framework for occupational therapy practitioners to integrate the program's concepts into their daily practice. The ideas and examples can be applied in numerous settings and can enhance both individual and group treatment. Topics include needs assessment, methods of delivery, and outcomes. Ten sample modules integrate occupation into topics and activities to make the program relevant to each person and every group and lead to meaningful and dynamic outcomes. Tools are included to help practitioners plan and implement their own Lifestyle Redesign Program.
