For Parents, Teachers, and Agents These monologues are about kids and for kids. Often, kids are given material meant for adults or adult actors. This is hard for them to read and act. This book contains situations kids can relate to and understand. Some of the words may be challenging on the page, but they are easily understood. Inside, you ll see a great variety of scenarios and emotions to choose from. Often, the monologues change mood or direction so the actor can show a range. They are kept short and sweet so they don t overwhelm. A few are particularly brief, though specific and finely tuned, for early readers. There are a lot of character types that kids recognize from their lives the show-off, the chicken, the boss, the teacher s pet, etc. Encouraging them to really play up the feelings and character types often has dramatic results. I have often seen shy children transform into big hams! If you d like, change a girl s speech to a boy s speech or vice versa. If you need or want to change a word, do it! You can do anything you want with these monologues. Teachers, these monologues may spark the imaginations of your students. See if they can write their own.The topics and language are kid-tested and approved from my work in New York schools and summer camps. Enjoy and explore! Kristen Dabrowski
