The main character of this novel is an English wife of a Roman industrialist. She is woken in the middle of the night by a telephone call notifiying her of her husband's death in a bomb explosion. The novel is set in the era of the Red Brigades and her husband's left-wing views has caused many to suspect that he had been transporting explosives for terrorists. She is convinced that her husband is innocent and she works to prove this and the fact that Neofascists planted the bomb to discredit the Left. As she frantically searches for the truth with the active resistance by the couple's relatives, she must also cushion her son from the pain of such a loss.
