A hip mama cat with double-pierced ears, wire-rimmed glasses, and a large fringed purse sets off for the park with her daughter, Rachael, and Rachael's canine cousin David trailing close behind. "My momma has EVERYTHING in her purse," Rachael tells David, "and the purse is magic, too!" David is skeptical, and he remains unimpressed even after Rachael scrapes her knee and Momma pulls a bandage from her purse: "Everyone has bandages." But his skepticism begins to fade as Momma finds something in her purse to solve every dilemma. Desperate to save face, David opens Momma's purse and slinks off with an object Rachael is asking for--a bucket. But his plan backfires when he winds up in the lake, and Momma pulls a rescue kit from her magical purse and saves him. Bogan, creator of the clever Spike picture books, brings the same offbeat humor, campy characterizations, and expressive illustrative style to this charmer. Lauren Peterson

PreSchool-Grade 2–Rachael, a kitten, is proud of her mother, who seemingly can do anything with the help of the contents of her magical purse. Cousin David, a young pup, is skeptical. However, Momma rises to the occasion time and again during a trip to the park. She reaches into her oversized pocketbook and pulls out bandages when Rachael hurts her knee, a fluffy purple sweater after she begins to shiver, "a perfect picnic lunch" when they are hungry, and all sorts of gear when it starts to rain. When David accidentally falls into the water, Momma uses the rope in her purse to rescue him. As the sun comes out, the two youngsters give her the one thing she cannot stow away in her bulging bag of tricks: a loving hug and kiss. This comical adventure is illustrated with vibrant ink-and-watercolor paintings that capture the emotions of the characters and include humorous details, such as the kitchen sink that appears when Momma is cleaning out her handbag.
