The concept of "eHealth" dates back to the 1960s, when physicians, computer scientists, and others began thinking about the ideas of medical informatics and biomedical computing. Today the term eHealth, in use only since about 1999, encompasses the technology as well as the cognitive, information processing, and communications tasks of medical practice, education, and research. The volume offers 28 chapters that provide an overview of eHealth efforts in Europe as well as specific topics related to national and regional health information networks; eHealth systems and services for health professionals; empowering patients and citizens in the management of health and well-being; and industrial and standardization issues.
