BE TO ME is comprised of William H. Hodgkins' written and received letters, post-war reminiscences, reflected in his contribution to the History of the Thirty Sixth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, 1862-1865, indicated in this work as [WRN] -- brief for Willie's Regimental Narrative, and extracts from his book entitled, THE BATTLE OF FORT STEDMAN, MARCH 25, 1865, indicated in this work as [BFS] -- brief for Battle of Fort Stedman. These elements combined chronicle the Civil War as he saw it, his relationship with Miss Augusta S. Hayward and his rise from private to brevet major. The battle maps are not to scale and have been kept as basic as possible, excluding many small roads and streams. The focus is to provide some illumination of the microcosm of Willie's world in relation to the overall battle front.
