David E. Crosby, pastor of First Baptist Church of New Orleans, has often encountered inquiries of faith throughout his long career in ministry. Serving as a dedicated pastor in more than four churches, he soon felt the need to document a concise summary of the first principles of religious belief. A prolific writer, Crosby has penned many articles for respected newspapers, including the Baptist Standard, New Orleans Times-Picayune, and Houston Chronicle. He has also published numerous devotional guides and instructional booklets. Crosby lives by a unique doctrine-the communication of gospel through deed is just as, if not more, important as its proclamation through word. He established both the Baptist Crossroads Project, a low-income housing initiative in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans, and the First Baptist Home Recovery Ministry, which assists homeowners in the rebuilding of property damaged in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the homeless of New Orleans, launching and implementing a plan to develop emergency housing for those most in need of it.
"Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all."
--Proverbs 31:29
God gave his people special gifts, making each one unique and filled with glorious potential. This volume encourages the faithful to embrace the virtues of love, joy, peace, patience, and self-control to aspire toward God's goal for them, as epitomized by the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31.
This collection of verses for thirty-one days of reflective meditation begins with the sayings of King Lemuel, the recorded words of a mother to a young king. The text of the virtuous woman follows, which provides an inspired description of a person of excellence. Accompanied by scripture reading recommendations, these reflections are designed to encourage actions of body, soul, and spirit that characterize and create excellence in human beings.
"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
--Proverbs 31:25
In her role as wife, mother, caregiver, and sage, the virtuous woman not only brings blessings upon herself, but also sets an example to those around her. This paean to the virtuous woman reflects upon the many things she does to improve the life of her family and serves as a guide so that all readers may set out upon the path of excellence.
Each of the daily verses, reflections, and prayers focuses on one aspect of realizing the amazing potential each individual possesses. From success in marriage and finance to cultivating gratitude and diligence, the themes and virtues presented encourage spiritual and personal growth, one day and one verse at a time.
