Chemical sensors are widely used to detect the presence of a target substance in clinical, environmental, food, and industrial applications. Seven chapters contributed by Japanese scientists and engineers describe the principles, challenges, and novel types of chemical sensors being developed which mimic biological detectors responsive to multi-dimensional neural information. Nakata (chemistry, Nara U. of Education, Japan), who is the main contributor, concludes that time-dependent nonlinear properties are part of the solution rather than the problem in developing artificial sensors.
