Mukasey served as Attorney General of the United States from November 2007 to January 2009, and as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York from 1988 to 2006, where he presided over, among other cases, those involving Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and Jose Padilla. He is now a lawyer in private practice in New York.
