In April 2007, I, Janet Bergdoll, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Isaiah 65:24 became very real to me, in ways I could not have imagined. I am not a writer, but was compelled to keep a journal that expresses not only the events related to the illness, but my feelings related to those events. Although I am a registered nurse, this journal in no way addresses the medical side of this diagnosis and some terms and descriptions are written to the layman. This accounting is from my heart to yours. Unlike some people, I was blessed to have had an orientation to breast cancer. My only sister, Mary, was diagnosed with beast cancer approximately two weeks before my diagnosis. She is four years older than I am and lives about twenty-five miles from me. We were always "close," but never as close as we would become. I have had and continue to have a beautiful life, filled with all the ups and downs of all families. I have been blessed with a wonderful faithful husband and have three special children, two sons and a daughter, and four terrific grandchildren. My husband and I have three siblings each.Both sides of the families have been one big combined family for so many years and are an important part of my life. In more recent years, after my sister's husband's death and her daughter married and moved to a neighboring town, Mary would go with my husband and me on vacations, including trips to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Arkansas and one to Canada. These times together created many vivid and colorful memories. Sisterhood is a precious gift. Life is a precious gift.
