John Bunyan (1628-1688) was an English Nonconformist preacher, writer, and religious thinker whose works became central to Protestant devotional literature. Born in Bedfordshire, Bunyan served in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War before becoming a Baptist preacher. His refusal to conform to the restored Church of England led to imprisonment, and it was in that world of persecution, preaching, scripture, and inward spiritual struggle that his major religious writings took shape.
