Globally, almost 1 billion people lack clean drinking water. Another 2.6 billion have no access to hygienic sanitation facilities, and 1.2 billion lack any sanitation facilities at all. Each day, an average of 5,000 children die due to water and sanitation-related diseases, many easily preventable. In 2000, through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) U.N. project, the international community committed to halving the proportion of people without access to clean water and basic sanitation by 2015. Investing in a water supply yields an average economic return of $4.4 to $1. Investment in sanitation yields $9.1 to $1. Poor women and girls are hardest hit by the absence of toilets. They care for the sick and have the greatest physical contact with human waste. Lacking toilets in overcrowded slums means going the whole day without relieving oneself and then risking exposure or even sexual assault at night, a humiliating and dangerous daily routine. Every time we flush the toilet, 3.3 gallons of drinking water are degraded. At 5.2 flushes per day, each of us degrades 6,260 gallons of drinking water each year. This is 1.6 trillion gallons annually that is flushed in the United States alone. Since one gallon of polluted water then pollutes 10 gallons of clean water in the river or sea, 16 trillion gallons of water need to be treated just to replace flushed toilet water. Dr. Smarajit Roy wrote this important book proposing his own suggestions for an easy, affordable and sustainable solution to improve global health. He is a retired chartered engineer. Originally from India, Dr. Roy now lives in London. Author's Website: http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/ToiletsToRent.html Publisher's Website: http://www.strategicbookgroup.com
