Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher born in Athens around 428 or 427 BCE. A student of Socrates and later the teacher of Aristotle, he founded the Academy, one of the earliest and most influential centers of higher learning in the Western world. Plato wrote in the form of dialogues, using conversations between Socrates and other figures to investigate morality, politics, knowledge, reality, love, education, and the nature of the soul.His major works include The Republic, Symposium, Phaedo, Apology, Timaeus, and Laws. Through his theory of Forms, his examination of ideal government, and his insistence that philosophy should transform both the individual and society, Plato established questions that continue to define philosophical inquiry. His influence extends far beyond philosophy into theology, political theory, literature, psychology, education, and the sciences.
