The Roman Catholic Church has a relatively great size of all branches of Christianity. Based in the Vatican and led by the Pope, the Catholic Church has approximately 1.3 billion followers globally. However, it should also be clear that the Vatican/Holy See, the universal government of the Catholic Church, acts similarly to the federal government. While the United States federal government oversees the state and county governments, the Vatican does the same with the Archdiocese and the Diocese. Within its territory, the bishop has three powers: legislative, judicial, and administrative/governance. Those that identify as Catholics in the United States make up at least 22 percent of the population.

In 1565, St. Augustine, Florida, was founded. It is documented as one of North America's first arrival points for enslaved Black Africans. It is also the first known or oldest Black Catholic Community in the United States. In 1606, the first documented slave birth recorded in St. Augustine was Agustin, the son of enslaved Agustin and Francisca. The child was Christened a Catholic.

In the United States during the beginning of the 19th century, Catholics were a feared and despised immigrant population as Protestants could imagine being. Catholic convents and churches were destroyed by fire, and in the following 20th century, the Church was attacked by groups lacking understanding of it, including the Ku Klux Klan.
