Brother Lawrence, born Nicolas Herman around 1614, was a French soldier who later entered a Carmelite monastery in Paris as a lay brother. Assigned largely to kitchen work and other humble duties, he developed a spiritual practice centered on maintaining a continual awareness of God's presence during every activity.His conversations, letters, and spiritual teachings were collected after his death and published as The Practice of the Presence of God.
