What does abuse feel like?
It feels heavy, tangible, scary, and hopeless. The psychotic inky darkness of abuse from my former spouse was complex. He wove in and out of the reality of his mind. His darkness surrounded us, chocked, and suffocated us till no hope was left, but for a pinpoint of light.
How can you recognize abuse?
I describe domestic violence/abuse in two ways: the hunter and the caged animal. Both ultimately have control as the foundation.
- Hunters seek out their prey, groom, lure, and never relinquish their control.
- Caged animals are trapped within their own pain, addiction, fear, and seek to control everything. A caged animal strikes out at anyone to free itself; others are damaged—the result is the same—abuse.

After nine years of surviving in the abyss, I finally hit the bottom. I knew I needed to escape. I had tried before and failed; it nearly cost me my life. Yet, a pinpoint of light was given again. I discovered the key to my escape. Through my true-life story, you see the key, and the plan I developed towards freedom.
Why do I share this story? I write it for the victims, survivors, and supporters to give them hope! There is more than hope; there is light! With that light, you can escape. There is a way out of abuse. Make a plan; you can. It is up to you to develop that plan. You know your situation best. You are in control of it. You!
Why? Because you are worth saving. You are worth fighting for. You are light! I believe in you. Follow your pinpoint of light and find your freedom today!

April T Giauque escaped the abyss of abuse through pinpoints of light. She shares her success story with others to encourage Victims to become Victors, for Advocates to understand their impact, and for supporters to understand their value. She is the founder of Pieced-Together, which serves the education community, and Pinpoints of Light, which serves the nonprofit community. My former spouse could not see us or find us because he was locked away in his own mind of mental illness, then became trapped by substance abuse, and would strike out in forms of Domestic Violence. He had suffered painful experiences in his childhood, and that pain warped and twisted his mind and awakened the genetic mental illness that runs in his family. I share the stories as he told them to me: sometimes during drunken depressed states and other times with sober clarity, to give background. I describe abuse in two ways: the hunter and the caged animal. Both ultimately have control as the foundation. His mental illness was awakened from his pain, and as stress was added to it, he needed to control everything. How? As a caged animal strikes out at anyone to free itself; others are damaged in that process. In nine years of marriage, we went through various stages; incredible rays of the sun, to dimming light, to growing darkness, to finally inky blackness of the abyss of abuse.
