Jaret C. Daniels is a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History’s McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, and he is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida. Jaret holds a Ph.D. in entomology and specializes in the ecology and conservation of at-risk butterflies and other native insect pollinators. He is a professional nature photographer and author of many successful field guides, gardening books, and general interest titles on butterflies, insects, wildflowers, native plants, and wildlife landscaping. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Pipevine Swallowtail

Above: overall black; male has iridescent greenish-blue scaling on hindwings; female is duller black with a single row of white submarginal spots

Below: hindwings with broad iridescent blue scaling on outer half with a row of prominent orange spots

Compare: Spicebush Swallowtail (pg. 55) is larger with prominent crescent-shaped submarginal spots; Red-spotted Purple (pg. 47) lacks hindwing tails; female Black Swallowtail (pg. 51) is larger with orange hindwing spot.

Wingspan: 2.75–4.0" (7.0–10.2 cm)

Habitat: fields, pastures, roadsides, pinelands, woodlands

Abundance: occasional

Sexes: dissimilar, female is dull black with a prominent row of white spots

Broods: multiple generations

Egg: brownish-orange, round, laid singly or in small clusters

Larva: velvety black with orange spots and numerous fleshy tubercles; superficially resembles a centipede

Larval Host Plants: various pipevines (Aristolochia spp.), especially Virginia Snakeroot (Aristolochia serpentaria)

Notes: A relatively small member of the family, the Pipevine Swallowtail nevertheless has a strong, rapid flight. Adults frequently visit flowers but rarely linger at any one blossom for long. They continuously flutter their wings while feeding. The velvety black larvae sequester various toxins from their host. These chemicals render the larvae and adults highly distasteful to many predators. As a result, several other butterfly species mimic the color pattern of the Pipevine Swallowtail in order to gain protection.
