Megan Viets, a mystery writer, witnesses a real murder in a resort town in the San Bernardino Mountains, where she lives with her disabled husband and small son. On her way back to California, Megan stops in New York and learns that Aldo Bandini, is a lawyer for the mob. Meanwhile Megan's husband falls ill and is not expected to live. Megan continues to work with the local sheriff, and the two develop a stormy relationship. The FBI has to be called in and Megan becomes embroiled in some dangerous situations. She is ultimately able to help capture a fugitive on the FBI's most-wanted list and ultimately solves the mystery.
