Porter's novel recounts the life of James Lewis MacFarlane, a young WWI veteran who escapes from a military hospital to avoid being sent to a tubercular isolation camp and who eventually finds himself at work aiding a beekeeper. It is there that he finds the courage to recover from his wounds, and for his efforts is rewarded with adventure, happiness, and love. It is also a story of the restorative power and beauty of nature, a dominant theme in Porter's work. There have been several adaptations of this novel to film.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American novelist, naturalist, photographer, and conservationist whose fiction drew heavily on the landscapes, wildlife, and rural communities of Indiana. Born Geneva Grace Stratton in Wabash County, Indiana, she developed a lifelong interest in birds, insects, plants, and wetlands, and much of her best-known work reflects close observation of the natural world. Her writing helped bring the Limberlost Swamp and other Midwestern environments into popular fiction at a time when many such habitats were being drained, cleared, and transformed.Stratton-Porter became one of the most widely read American authors of the early twentieth century. Her novels often combine romance, moral testing, family conflict, self-reliance, and detailed nature description, giving her work strong appeal to both general readers and younger audiences. Her best-known books include Freckles, A Girl of the Limberlost, The Harvester, Laddie, and Michael O'Halloran. In addition to her fiction, she wrote nature studies and produced wildlife photography, making her an important figure in the overlap between popular literature, conservation awareness, and American regional writing.
