I learned early on that life is simply not handed to you on a silver platter. This was a constant reminder in my immigrant household. If I wanted something, I had to earn it, and I had to understand the “why” behind this reasoning. I’d say this is the true essence of The Rich Hermana: a manifesto not just for me, but for every hermana striving to create a life of abundance and purpose.

I grew up in a small, all-woman household where dreams were as plentiful as the adversity we faced. My mother, a woman with little more than hope and a suitcase, immigrated from Venezuela and was my first mentor in the art of resilience. She didn’t just teach me about money; she showed me what it meant to fight for a better future, even when you came from nothing. She faced the challenges, the setbacks, and the heartaches, but she never lost sight of her “why.” That “why” was simple yet powerful: to provide a better life for her daughters and to give us the opportunities she never had.

It’s no exaggeration to say that my mother’s story is the cornerstone of The Rich Hermana. Her journey was not about wealth in the traditional sense. It was about a wealth of spirit, perseverance, and love…and it’s her legacy that I carry forward as I write this book, a book I hope reaches every woman who dares to dream beyond her circumstances.

For me, my “why” is deeply intertwined with my identity as a first-gen Latina, as a daughter of an immigrant who fought for her place in this world. It’s about honoring that struggle by helping others and being the big sister I wish I’d had, guiding and cheering on every Rich Hermana out there.

“But, Ixamar, how do I even begin to uncover my 'why'? I DON’T wake up every morning ready to face the world head-on!"

I first learned about Ikigai (pronounced “ee-kee-guy”) a few years ago during a time when I thought I was fulfilling everything on my bucket list, yet nothing felt right. I was checking all the boxes, doing the damn thing, yet I felt completely unfulfilled.

Then someone explained it to me. In very simple terms, it’s the art of creating your dream life while figuring out what you love to do, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and how you wish to be rewarded for it all.

As a girl with one too many hobbies and undiagnosed ADHD, figuring out my Ikigai took a bit of internal digging, but the essence of it sticks around to this day. I knew I wanted to use my love for communication to help others in ways I wish someone had done while growing up. I knew I loved creating, writing, and learning a fun new fact every day to use as icebreakers at parties. It all sparked joy; I like to keep these reminders on a sticky note in my office for when I start doubting my “why”.

This journey is not just about financial wealth. It’s about the wealth of spirit, of self-belief, of knowing that you deserve to take up space in this world. I want The Rich Hermana to be more than just a community—I want us to be a movement. It’s a call to every woman who dares to dream, to fight, to build a life of meaning and joy.
