No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable. — Adams Smith. The Wealth of Nations. Imagine a situation whereby every ‘big’ person in the country is not only developingAbuja, Lagos, Kano, Port-Harcourt or any capital city but is also involved in developing the people in the rural areas especially his/her kith and kin. Nigeria will not remain the same. It is no gainsaying that one of the greatest needs of Nigeria practical, purposeful, empathetic and energetic leadership that will transform you God endowed ample natural resources into human resource development –In addition, it is pertinent to state that the essence of being ‘there’ or any place, position of authority at one point in time and in fact living, is to make lasting, observable, noticeable and palpable impact on the lives of people; not to manipulate, oppress suppress, coerce, intimidate and cheat as it is common nowadays. This book is not out to attack any person or institution as the case may be; deflnitely, it is neither anti nor pro-establishment. However a situation whereby only a few people are living a life of affluence at the expense of the poor should be a cause for concern. What are you doing to help the less privileged ones around you, those you are purporting to be representing?Where you are today is not necessarily as a result of your hard work. It could be sheer luck or what others will call destiny. Some have worked so hard but they are not where you are today. I have said it over and over again that I have never ever dreamt of becoming a lecturer in my life. But God who is good at giving gifts and abundant grace took me to this level is worthy of praise. One is sure that you also have a similar testimony. It is very easy to talk about poverty, illiteracy and underdevelopment in general but very difficult to do something very practical in order to improve the situation at the community level. One has therefore resolved to bridge the gap between theory and action in the field of research, community development work and reality of the poor. What about you? An African saying has it that: Before you can be higher than others you must have stood on the shoulder of another person. Do not remove the ladder when you are ‘there’; you might need it or ‘them’ when it time to come down. Remember you cannot be ‘there’ for ever. Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves- James Barne.
