From 1994 to 2003 Joseph Cutshall-King, wrote a column that combined regional history, running commentary and personal reminiscences called "Over My Shoulder." It appeared weekly in The Post-Star, the daily newspaper of Glens Falls, NY. Dedicated to the ideal that reading history is not torture, Cutshall-King used The Post-Star’s territory, north from Ticonderoga, south to Saratoga, east into Vermont, and west into the Adirondacks to prove it. Readers will find tales of the Revolutionary War interspersed among a girl’s life on the canals, new discoveries on Black history and Women’s Suffrage, tales of tourism, and stories of great artists. Cutshall-King railed against destruction of historic sites, while sharing memories of his time growing up family pharmacy. And throughout, he would return again and again to histories of the region’s many cities, villages, towns and hamlets. And to the history of the region where a new country called The United States was given its chance to survive and thrive in 1777. Volume 1 includes columns from 1994 to 1997, is 175 pages long, and has an index. The book’s editor is Julia C. Cutshall-King. The cover design is by Michael George King of Black Swan Image Works, Frederick, MD.
