Processes and Prototypes for Composers by George Frederick McKay is a bit of time travel, quoting the music of Beethoven to illuminate music theory as espoused by McKay over four decades at the University of Washington, Seattle School of Music, where he was recognized as a fine Professor of Music, Master Composer and author. This new book is a first edition and can be considered as an adjunct volume to McKay's highly recognized Creative Orchestration and Creative Harmony, which delve more deeply into a greater scope of studies, examining a greater number of composers. Processes and Prototypes relates to poetry and philosophy as it explains the importance of form in music, and illustrates the spirit of McKay's experiential teaching method in this concise volume. His students over the years have earned many honors including the Pulitzer, an Academy Award, the National Medal of Arts, the Grammy for Classical Music and several Guggenheim Grants. McKay's music has been recorded in the 21st century on NAXOS Records cd's, including several orchestral selections involving Grammy winning musicians including, William Bolcom, John McLaughlin Williams and Leonard Slatkin.
