Forests are magical. Emma lives in a house built on the outskirts of a small Maine town where the woods grew all around. The sounds coming from the forest fascinated Emma, especially when she heard rustling in the bushes as small creatures stirred. She heard sighing in the trees as the wind danced among the branches. Her mom, her dad, her brother and even her teacher!When she went to her room that night her thoughts swirled, dark and heavy. Her heart felt heavy too of how unhappy she was. She was tired of school, tired of her brother, and tired of being told what to do. School was boring. Her brother was annoying. Her father worked all the time. Her mother was always busy, and never had time for her. Her house was boring. Even her swing was boring. She was ready for something different. Something new and exciting. She wanted to call the shots. Make her own rules and go when and where she wanted to go. She wasn’t a baby anymore! She was ten years old now, and it was time for action! She wanted to explore her world. She wanted to know where the owl went when it flew away into the darkness. She wanted to know what caused the rustling in the bushes. She wanted to know why the trees swayed with the wind. She wanted to know what secrets the forest held. Before she fell asleep she came up with a plan.Satisfied, she snuggled into her blanket, closed her eyes, slipping away into somewhere shadowy. Her eyelids fluttered as she dreamed. She dreamed of starry night skies, owls, and tall silhouettes of trees, their branches reaching toward the star-lit sky. She dreamed about the secret sounds of the forest and magic waiting to be discovered.
