Dr. Elbert Dysart Botts was a hero of the modern era. He was an engineer who worked at a division of California’s Highway Transportation Agency later called Caltrans. These little round markers, laid out in rows, make it easier for drivers to stay within their lanes, especially when it's dark or rainy, or if a driver is sleepy or distracted.

Roz Silva is a writer, editor and publicist. She is a former educator of her own four home-schooled children and served as a substitute teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District for nearly twenty years. Now retired, she lives in Chula Vista, California, with her husband and dog. They have seven grandchildren.
