History tells us about the past, how change has taken place, and prepares us for what we might expect in the years ahead. It’s not just about the weather. But rather it’s a record about how lives were changed by the introduction of industrial jobs, about the importance of education, about how hard work and a vision can influence an individual’s future, and about how important it is to live in a community that cares about each other. And yes, it’s about the weather too.History also teaches us about past misdeeds, the mistreatment of others during the period of slavery and later during the time of segregation. History shows us when we erred in destroying a building that should have been preserved and makes us proud when we see a building kept intact that was deserving of restoration. In many ways history speaks to us like a long lost relative. It’s like remembering what your father or grandfather told you aboutsome happening long ago or maybe your mother sharing a favorite recipe passed down from one generation to another. These are treasures we don’t want to forget. But, if not permanently preserved, they will be lost forever. In this work, “Notes from Lebanon’s First 200 Years,” the effort has been made to capture and preserve much of the community’s history. There will of course be oversights, places or happenings that should have been mentioned that weren’t, and people who should have gotten “shout- outs” that didn’t.Please excuse these shortcomings but know that best intentions were at heart when composing the material. We urge you to use this book as a catalyst to begin your own history. Tell your children about the importance of preserving memories and put on paper what you remember about what your parents and grandparents may have told you about a winter storm, their first experience of driving on the interstate, paying more than $4 for a gallon of gas, or seeing water sell for as much or more than milk. This is the essence of history. If these matters, these remembrances are not kept, they will be lost forever. It is the responsibility of all of us to make sure this doesn’t happen.
