Neil Wilson nació en Escocia donde ha residido buena parte de su vida. Vive en Perthshire y ha sido escritor a tiempo completo desde 1988, trabajando en más de 80 guías para diferentes editoriales, incluidos los títulos de Lonely Planet de países como Escocia, Inglaterra, Irlanda y Praga. Entusiasta de las actividades al aire libre, desde niño Neil es un activo senderista, ciclista de montaña, marinero, snowboarder, pescador de caña y escalador, y ha subido y recorrido a pie los cuatro continentes, incluidos los ascensos al Jebel Toubkal (Marruecos), el monte Kinabalu (Borneo), el Old Man of Hoy en las Islas Orcadas (Escocia) y la cara noreste del Half Dome en el valle de Yosemite (California). Como la mayoría de autores de Lonely Planet, Neil entró en la edición de guías de viaje por accidente.
