In 1933, Pat Ollivieri and his brother Harry were operating a hot dog stand. Tired of hot dogs, they grilled thinly cut, inexpensive steak and ate it on a roll with grilled onions. After sampling the chopped steak, a cabbie suggested they forget about the hot dogs. In 1966, Joey Vento opened his doors across the street. His son Geno, of Geno's Steaks, admits his family didn't invent the sandwich - they just perfected it.
